Message plates to dump the heat into the flywheel itself. The flywheel and plates are machined to have flat mating surfaces but the plates are still going to warp a bit. Even the slightest warp is going to quickly reduce the transfer of heat to the flywheel, which leads to more localized heat in the plates, which further warps them, and so on and so forth....

Probably could modify the design to have a lot more seperate friction plates with toothed backs that match toothed sockets on the flywheel - to increase the surface area of contact between the plates and flywheel and improve heat transfer.......?
